Biography

I'm finally back to my research after 2 years designing and completing the building. Before that, this is what I'd been doing in paleontology:

  • Devonian and Ordovician macrofossils
  • 'phosphatic' microfossils and scolecodonts
  • electric-pulse disaggregation technology
  • anomalous geological structure; suspected impact-shocked quartz
  • well logs, stratigraphic mapping and roadside geology
  • youth and lifelong learning classes and field trips

Independent research under Dr. Paul Weiblen, Professor Emeritus, University of Minnesota, including: (supported by grants-in-kind/kindness)

  • Minnesota Geological Survey: (Winter 2000 to Fall 2003):
study of stratigraphy and fossils at anomalous geological structure in W. Wisconsin; collection and documentation of new occurrence of microfosssils (scolecodonts) at that site; geographic, topographic and stratigraphic mapping in that region.

  • University of Minnesota Dept of Geology and Geophysics: (Summer 1998 to 2002):
independent research under faculty mentor including: research access to Paleontology Collection for the study of Decorah Shale microfossils; application of electric-pulse disaggregation technology for preparation of minerals/fossil specimens; optical and scanning electron microscope (SEM) documentation of microfossils; powder X-ray spectrographic and SEM analysis of shales; preparation and examination of thin-sections including suspected impact-shocked quartz

Unstructured research:  INDEPENDENT STUDY (Stratigraphy and invertebrate paleontology)

  • Wisconsin (1999 to present):
roadside geology of Pierce and surrounding counties of W. Wisconsin
  • Minnesota (1994-1996):
collection and study of Decorah Shale 'phosphatic' microfossils
  • Iowa/Minnesota (1993 to present):
collection and documentation of Upper Devonian macrofossils of N. Iowa: and Upper Ordovician macrofossils of S. Minnesota

Teaching:

  • U of MN Elder Learning Institute (Fall 1999):
'What's This Fossil Doing In My Back Yard? (12 hrs + field)
  • Roseville Bird Club (Winter 1999):
Evening lecture and exhibit (same subject)
  • Cannon Valley Elder Collegium (planned for Fall 2004):
same course with variations (20 hrs + field trips)
  • Various groups (1998 to present):
Field trip guide-Cambrian, Ordovician, Devonian fossils of IA, MN, WI
  • ARTech Charter School (middle school) (Spring 2004):
Paleontology Symposium (6 days + field trip)
